Friendly club for all skill levels in Billingham.
At Cleveland Carving Club, we pride ourselves on being a friendly and inclusive wood carving community. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced carver, you will find a warm welcome and support from fellow members.
The first four sessions are complimentary for new members to determine if this fascinating hobby suits them, and to learn more about the club. Following that, the subscription fee is £8 per calendar month. (See below for meeting days/times).
Tools will be provided by the club for the initial period.
The club will provide the initial piece of wood, and additional pieces can be purchased from the club at a reasonable cost.
Established in 2014, a group of six, rapidly expanded to include 15 carvers who comprised the initial membership. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and we now have over 45 members of all ages and backgrounds.
Since 2022 we have set a themed exercise in which members can participate. The first theme commemorated the Queen's Silver Jubilee and each member individually designed and carved a spoon. The results were very impressive.
In 2023 the challenge was to create a unique design within the shape of a 50p piece. Once again the club showed great imagination and skill in producing some spectacular pieces.
In 2024 the Royal British Legion approached the club to create some carvings for the annual poppy appeal. Once again the results were spectacular and were well received by the RBL, who displayed them in their pop-up shop in Billingham town centre.
We hope to create even more stunning masterpieces for the Stockton and Darlington Railway 200th anniversary in 2025 which will be displayed at various events in the region (see examples below).
Niffany Level Crossing, Stirton with Thorlby, North Yorkshire.
Skerne Bridge Darlington. The world's oldest railway bridge in continuous use.
Appeared on the £5 note between 1990 and 2002.
An example of Locomotion No. 1
The world's first passenger train, built in 1825 by George and Robert Stephenson.
A beautiful carving of a first class carriage desigend to run on tracks.
Note the hand brake, this was the only method of slowing the engine pulling it.
Without the railway there would be no Thomas the Tank Engine!
